ESSENTIAL- Drawing Pencil set-  make sure you get the medium set so you have the widest variety of pencil leads. 

ESSENTIAL-  You'll need at least two of these kneaded erasers.  One for graphite drawing and the other for charcoal drawing.  These erasers can molded to any shape and erase by rubbing back and forth or pressing and lifting.  

ESSENTIAL-  Just about any white eraser will work, I prefer these inexpensive erasers. 

OPTIONAL-  A great eraser for small areas.  

SECONDARY-  Any type of drafting brush to brush the eraser crumbs off your paper without smearing it.  I really like this hake brush.

ESSENTIAL-  Small sketchbooks are perfect for our warm-ups exercises.  Any inexpensive brand will do for this.

ESSENTIAL-  A book of drawing paper (not sketch) is great for your drawing projects. 

SECONDARY-  A great permanent black ink pen used for "line & wash" art, ink drawings and more.  Can also use pigma pens of different thicknesses as well, but I like this medium tipped pen the best.

ESSENTIAL PALETTE COLOR-  Cad Red Light (Lt-Red)

I prefer Gamblin or M. Graham brands.

ESSENTIAL PALETTE COLOR- Alizarin Crimson (Mid-red). Gamblin brand is fine too.

ESSENTIAL PALETTE COLOR-  Transparent Red Oxide  (Dk-Red) or you can use a Transparent Earth Red in Gamblin or M Graham brands.

ESSENTIAL PALETTE COLOR-  Cad Yellow  (Lt-Yellow)

I prefer Gamblin or M Graham. Can also use a Cad Yellow Light

ESSENTIAL- You'll need a variety of different sizes of filbert brushes. I suggest that you don't spend tons of money on them so this is an affordable option.

For your first few projects you can just use canvas panels that are 8X10 or 9X12".  These can easily be picked up at Hobby Lobby or Michaels as well.

Once you get through a few projects you'll move to stretched canvas, then MDF board and then ABS panels. 

ESSENTIAL- You'll need palette knife that is flexible and well made for mixing your paints.

ESSENTIAL- This is the container you store your Gamsol in! It has a tray with holes inside to allow the paint sediments to settle to the bottom. The three clasps ensure it doesn't leak when tipped on its side.

ESSENTIAL- You'll need an odorless brush cleaner.  I suggest turpenoid or Gamsol by Gamblin.

You will need a palette and there are several to choose from but the one most of my students use is this one!  It has a cover that seals tight so you can store your wet paints for a while.

Several students have gotten two of them so they have something to take their smaller wet paintings home in safely.  (A pizza box works great too!)

If you buy the palette shown above you will need some palette sheets to make clean up much easier. 

This is another option for a palette. If you prefer to hold your palette instead of setting it on the table you'll love this palette.  I prefer this palette and I clean it off regularly.  It take a little more work, but it's a palette!

You'll need something to protect your clothing.  Most students just use an apron, but make sure it's long and goes to your knees at least to protect your pants when you sit and paint.  You can also use a lab coat, which is what I prefer because I can wear good clothes and know that they won't get ruined. 

If you prefer to cover your clothing more, then a lab coat is a great choice! I love mine!  It's messy and has lots of paint on it, but my clothes don't!

FYI- Several of my students have asked what is a good easel for them to purchase to use at home.  I really like this one because the "H" frame is sturdy and moves easily when needed.  I have these frames in the studio and love them!
